After months of rumours and speculations, on Tuesday evening, September 10, Apple released the sequel to the iPhone 5. Similarities between these two models are more than obvious, as they look nearly identical; however when it comes to the hardware, differences are significant.
Inside the iPhone 5S we finds an Apple A7 processor, which is the first 64-bit processor in a smartphone ever. iPhone 5S is twice as fast as its predecessor due to the 64-bit processor.
Apple says nothing about the number of cores in the processor; the guess is that the A7 and A6 are dual-core. To take advantage of multiple cores, the software must be written so that different tasks can be assigned to different cores, which of course becomes more difficult to exploit the more cores you have.
A7 processor has received a coprocessor called M7, which Apple calls a “motion processor”. It will manage all information from the phone’s sensors such as gyro, accelerometer and compass. This processor is very useful when it comes to health and training apps.
The fingerprint scanner
The home button has become a fingerprint scanner to automatically log on to the phone. It can register multiple fingerprints (if you want it to), so for example, other family members should be able to use the phone. Apple mentions only two uses for the fingerprint reader: To unlock the phone, and to authenticate themselves when making purchases in iTunes and the AppStore.
Apple has received a lot of criticism for its weak 4g support. iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 have 4G, but on mostly American frequencies. Apple now boasts that their new iPhones will have support for more LTE bands than anyone else, specifically 13 bands. In practice this means that they have five different hardware platforms with support for different frequencies.
The camera contains a lot of news compared to iPhone 5, for example it comes with 8 megapixels and it will have a slightly larger sensor, a larger aperture of f / 2.2 and a new dual LED that will provide more natural colours. The digital image stabilization is one of the new features. If you hold down the shutter button on the screen, pictures are taken in burst mode with up to 10 frames per second, and you can choose the best among them.
